Today is World Rabies Day, and Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD) has organised a Rabies Awareness Drive outside CST station to tell you all about the disease and how to deal with dog bites

Rabies is caused only by the bite of stray dogs. Only dogs spread rabies. Dogs having wounds also have rabies... "These are some of the myths associated with rabies," says Abodh Aras, CEO of animal welfare organisation -- Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD). To dispel such myths and spread awareness about the disease, this World Rabies Day, WSD has organised an awareness drive at CST station.
"The aim is not only to curb human death by rabies, but also to spread awareness about the disease and tell people what to do if a dog bites them," explains Abodh. At the day-long drive WSD personnel and veterinarians will spread awareness through posters and interactions. "We have carried out such drives in the past and the response has been great," he adds. At the drive, FAQ leaflets about rabies will also be distributed.
According to figures released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, deaths due to rabies have come down by more than 70% in 2010 as compared to 1994, the year when killing of stray dogs was stopped. According to recorded figures, human deaths due to rabies was six in 2010. Sterilisation and vaccination has been effective in controlling the spread of rabies. WSD has sterilised more then 41,500 stray dogs and impacted the lives of more than one lakh dogs through mass vaccination, adoption, healthcare and on-site first aid.
