Who is Karma Tenrab?
Karma Tenrab is an upcoming 31 year-old artist who is a Buddhist convert. He studied in MSU, Baroda (Maharaja Sayajirao University), but quit midway. He now paints, shuttling between Shantiniketan and Sikkim, where he lives with his wife. His past works have been reflective of his spiritual preoccupations, and most successful among them have been his Buddha series. I studied with him in school but lost touch. It's only recently when I heard of his work that I realised I actually knew him.
What work has he created for this show?
I didn't give him a brief. All I asked him to do was keep in mind that it will be exhibited in a store, and that his work will have to have a 'popish' feel. Even though he has included a a few Buddha paintings here, they still have carry a contemporary feel.
What more can we expect at the show?
A line of contemporary furniture and furnishings by the label 'D'Tour. Cycle rims, motorbike parts, beer barrels and utensils have been recycled to make various pieces of furniture. An interesting piece is a traditional Naga bed that has been transformed into a sofa.
What's your venture North East Venture about?
While working across various Indian cities, I realised that people knew very little of Northeastern art and its artisans. That's how NEV was born in 2009. Now I travel widely in the Northeast, looking for art that I can showcase in urban India. I have organised a few exhibitions in the past, but this is my first in Mumbai.u00a0
