Pregnant women need to be extra careful about dental hygiene. Active! speaks to experts to find out what you need to know about dental health during pregnancy. Plus six tips for a healthy smile

According to studies, pregnant women with periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a premature and low-weight baby than others.

Dr Shivani Sachdeva, infertility expert and gynaecologist, Phoenix Hospital, New Delhi, says, "During pregnancy, there are several hormonal changes that take place in a woman's body. Therefore, women who wish to conceive, are advised to get their teeth and gums cleaned."

Health complications
Among the health complications that can occur due to poor dental hygiene are periodontal infection (advance form of gum disease), loose teeth, ill-fitting crowns, bridges, and dentures. Repeated acid attacks in the form of medicines develop cavities while repeated instances of nausea and vomiting cause erosion.

"The overgrowth of gum tissue is called pregnancy tumours, which are usually found between the teeth and are believed to be related to excess plaque," avers Dr Sachdeva.During pregnancy, your body's hormone levels rise considerably. Gingivitis, especially common during the second to eighth month of pregnancy, may cause red, puffy or tender gums that tend to bleed when you brush.

"Most women also suffer from gum bleeding because during pregnancy there is increased number of estrogens and progesterone making the gums more sensitive. It can be prevented by regular home care, scaling and cleaning and regular dental check-ups," says Dr Kapil Gandhi, head of dentistry, Perfect Wellness, Delhi.

Good and bad foods
Certain foods can accelerate tooth decay. Dr Ekta Chadha, consultant Aesthetic Dental Surgeon says, "Any starchy high carbohydrate food will result in cavities. Carbonated soft drinks are also harmful because they cause erosion of the enamel. Whereas citrus fruits and green vegetables, which are a carrier of Vitamin A, C and several other minerals, assist in maintaining dental health."

Avoid x-rays?
Doctors have divergent opinons on whether or not dental X-rays are advisable. Dr Gandhi, points out that, "Dental x-rays are usually considered safe during pregnancy as the X-ray beam is more of a focused nature and negligible in size."

Dr Chadha however, disagrees, "X-rays during pregnancy are a completely no-no. It is not safe to take any pain killers or anaesthesia, so one is advised to undergo a complete check-up before they plan a baby, and not after it."

6 dental care tips for to-be moms

1. Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and floss daily.

2. Choose water or low-fat milk as a beverage. Avoid carbonated beverages during pregnancy.

3. X-rays should be avoided as far as possible

4. Eat a healthy diet. Foods that contain calcium can help your teeth and bones become stronger. Avoid sweets as that can lead to formation of cavities.

5. Go for regular dental check-ups.

6. A troublesome wisdom tooth should be removed, especially if it is an impacted one. All cavities should be filled.
