Five artists under one roof

It is an experiment with different techniques of art that will be showcased

"Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in" says famous poet Amy Lowell. What words are to a writer, the canvas is to the artist and depicting emotions on canvas is a talent of a select few.

Engrossed: Muthiah Kasi working on his woodblock painting

Founded by Indian Federation of Arts (IFA) Khoj International Artists' Association has come up with Peers 2011, a platform that gave five graduates from the field of art, architecture and designing a period of one month to experiment with their technique of art and come up with innovative ideas to express them. And now the participants are ready to showcase their work to the audience.

Participants speak
Aarti Sunder from the Academy of Fine Arts and Craft, Mumbai, is known for her usage of space. Her sketches are now adorning the walls of Khoj Studios. Another artiste Maripelly Praveen Goud, student of Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, uses grid paper which he twists and turns into different forms in pursuit of agitating the sub-conscious mind. With his art, he explains the nature of mankind which is both destructive and constructive at the same time.

"When you get to work with so many people under one roof, there is a tremendous exchange of knowledge. I made a lot of friends here and got to know many other artists. Here, I am trying my hand at sculptures which may prove beneficial for me in the future." he says.

NIFT Delhi's student Kundo Yumnam is efficient in adding curiosity to her piece of writing. By creating a Pandora's Box in the studio, she wants to enter the world of censorship. She chirps, "After being here for about a month, I can see myself grow as an artiste. My idea of Pandora's Box is inviting a lot of attention. Once you enter the room all those speculations regarding the box will be cleared."

Asked about the kind of experience she is getting, she adds, "This is my first residency, the experience is definitely something new and I have been getting a lot of attention. For future, I will continue with my practice."

Of woods and negatives
With the use of wooden blocks artiste Muthiah Kasi of D J Academy of Design, Coimbatore, tries to portray how commercialisation has swayed humans away from their dreams. Human life is becoming robotic these days and Kasi has tried to depict this sense of monotony.

The last participant, Pallavi Singh from College of Art, New Delhi is trying her hand at bringing out the psyche and habits of men between 40 and 60 years of age. She will use photographs and their negatives as her medium of expression to create a difference between the inner desires and the actions of menfolk.

"Khoj gave me the freedom to experiment with my technique and work in a totally new atmosphere after six years of college. Here everything depends on you, how you deal with the studio space, what sort of lighting you want ufffd all of it is upto us. This is one step above the exhibitions we do and a completely new experience. I've gained confidence and new ideas just keep clicking," she said. So go ahead to see what these young minds have in store for you. This is a great chance for artu00a0 lovers and aspiring artists to share views on a topic they all love.
