Gadget Review: Asus hits the sweet spot again with Zenfone Max

Zenfone Max

If a weak battery problem plagues your preent phone, you might want to try the latest Asus Zenfone Max, which comes with a massive battery and an upgraded processor, that too, at an attractive price of Rs 9,999. Here's how it fares:

Design (8/10)
The second generation of Zenfone Max gets a solid build design, similar to the previous model. The device sports a leather-like plastic backcover that adds a premium touch. The phone is heavy, weighing 202 g, but Asus has managed to limit its width, so it fits in your palm despite the bulky appearance.

Display (8/10)
The phone gets a 5.5-inch HD display (1280x720). The touch is nice and the blue light filter helps while reading.

Connectivity (9/10)
It features dual sim slots with support for 2G and 3G cellular networks on both slots and 4GLTE networks on either. No support for VoLTE, though.

Battery (10/10)
The major attraction is the 5,000mAh battery, which not only offers a longer power back-up (nearly two days), but also doubles up as a portable charger. Asus also offers an OTG cable, bundled with the phone to help recharge other devices.

Camera & Audio (8/10)
Asus has managed to pack in a 13MP rear camera with flash and laser auto focus and 5MP front camera without compro-mising on quality. The cameras take decent photos in day and low light conditions. The rear camera also comes with AE/AF and WB lock, a rarity in this price range.

OS (8/10)
The phone runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 with ZenUI as well. Despite the presence of several Asus apps (which we disabled instantly), the Android experience is well-integrated. We liked the built-in File Explorer, which comes with shortcuts to cloud storage, and a file cleaner.

Hardware & Performance (8/10)
Asus has made significant improvements with the new phone’s hardware, by offering two variants — a 16GB model with 2GB RAM and a 32GB model with 3GB RAM (for Rs 12,999). Both are powered by the Qualcommm Snapdragon 615 SOC with 1.5 GHz quad core processor, which pulls off most applications with ease. We didn’t face any overheating or app crashes either. Fortunately, Asus also offers a standalone MicroSD card slot, supporting up to 128GB external storage. We missed a finger print scanner, though.
