Thanks to its latest Kirin 650 processor, strong build and long lasting battery, Huawei impresses with the Honor 5C

Gadget review: The Huawei Honor 5C is built for performance

Huawei Honor 5C

Build and design (8/10): There’s nothing striking about the Honor 5C apart from the aluminum-alloy back with brushed metal finish. Contrast it with the plain front, and the appeal reduces even further. But once you hold the phone, you can feel its strong soul and a tough body that shields it. Huawei says the Honor 5C gets an all metal body, but we feel it’s a combination of plastic and metal, which works to its benefit when an accidental drop doesn’t leave a dent (as common in phones with all-metal bodies). Full marks for building a tough device.

Display (8/10): A 5.2-inch Full HD (1920x1080) display with 423 PPI pixel density is crisp and great to read, but at times we found the brightness little too less during video playback. Nevertheless, the display works across light conditions including in broad daylight. There are no details provided by Huawei on protection for the display, but it ships with a pre-applied screenguard. But expect scratches to become more prominent with time.

Battery (9/10): The Honor 5C gets a 3,000 mAh battery, which easily can last a day-and-half. For those looking for extra juice in their smartphones, the Honor 5C works beautifully. There’s no support for fast charge, but it can go from zero to 20% in half an hour, which is not bad.

Connectivity (7/10): The Honor 5C is a dual sim phone and supports 4G LTE, 3G and 2G, however, it features a hybrid sim tray (which means you can use either one sim and a memory card or only two sims at a time). Also, it can connect with 4G on only one sim at a time. There’s a micro-USB port at the bottom and 3.5mn audio jack at the top. The other connectivity options include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and A-GPS, which, again relies on Wi-Fi and other networks for navigation. It gets accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and digital compass.

Hardware & Performance (9/10): Huawei has packed its latest Kirin 650 chipset with octa-core processor in the Honor 5C, and a modest 2GB RAM. The combo manages to put up a strong performance, whether it’s multitasking or gaming. We tested the phone across graphic-intensive games for nearly an hour, and there was no sign of over-heating, which is another plus point. The device comes with a built-in storage of 16GB, which we feel isn’t sufficient. But then you can always add to the storage using an external memory card (it supports upto 128GB). There’s a fingerprint sensor at the back, placed right under the camera. It’s fast to response and we didn’t face any issues at all. The audio quality is also decent, and the speakers at the bottom put up an impressive show during conversations as well as movie playback.

CAMERA (8/10): Huawei has packed an autofocus 13MP rear camera with flash, and 8MP fixed focus front camera. Both cameras manage to get decent pictures, and work well across light conditions and at par with other devices in the price range.

Software and OS (7/10): The Honor 5C runs EMUI 4.1 on top of Android Marshmallow 6.1. Though it is one of the most
well-designed Android OSes out there, the Emotion UI doesn’t feature some of the latest features available on the Marshmallow, including automatically syncing Wi-Fi passwords, and app data of apps installed on older phones. While the factory apps constantly interrupt you seeking more permissions, the permission manger works wonderfully with third-party apps.
