Four years after the 26/11 terror attacks, NCPA hosts a memorial with the motive of making positive changes and looking ahead
Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges: We remember 26/11, an hour-and-forty-minutes-long memorial programme comes at a time when the news of Ajmal Amir Qasab, the lone terrorist captured after the attacks in 2008 being hanged in Pune earlier this week, continues to make waves.

It is perhaps apt then, that it claims to be an attempt to honour the oft-quoted ‘spirit of Mumbai’ in a bid to look forward. Conceptualised by theatre actor Devika Punjabi and organised by The Orchid Room Experiment, a production company jointly owned by her and actor Zafar Karachiwala, the event has also been organised with and for The Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT), a non-profit trust.
“We believe that it’s best to move forward from the events of 26/11 and create value and awareness using the platform of art and creativity,” says Punjabi.
The event is free and includes live vocals, dance, films and talks. “The theme is to break any caste or creed-related divisions, rid ourselves of preconceived notions and build bridges of hope and peace. Since we are a theatre company, this is our small contribution to society,” she adds.
There will be fusion music keeping the theme in mind. Terence Lewis, along with his dance troupe and D Wood, who will perform on a Six String Contra Bass guitar with Adrien D’Souza on Drums, Tala Faral on Saxaphone and Jake Charkey on the Cello, are some of the highlights.
“Our music is minimal and based on simple ideas. It incorporates influences from world music, jazz and Indian classical,” says D Wood, who is also the head of the music department at Whistling Woods International School. One for rare performances, he is honoured and extremely excited to play at this event. “Devika and I go a long way back to a salsa class we took years ago. I could never refuse to play for her especially for such a noble cause,” adds Wood.
That’s not all. Narayan Varma, the joint managing trustee of the PGCT explains that they plan to hold discussions too. “We have planned to intersperse entertainment with participative discussion. People closely related to the topic will speak, including some representatives from the Taj group, Police commissioner Satyapal Singh and Head of PCGT and ex-cop Julio Ribeiro, among others,” he concludes.
