This summer, drop by Yogurt Bay at Carter Road it's a great stop for affordable yogurt-based desserts, take-aways and Johnny Depp fans

Three weeks ago, Twitter was abuzz with @Yogurt Bay's generosity. Carter Road's latest frozen yogurt place only opened up in mid-March, but its enterprising owners started talking about it and giving away free cups on Twitter towards the end of February itself, with every re-tweet about them.

While that eventually may not have happened, 25 year-old Viral Jhaveri and 24 year-old Robin Chatterjee the enterprising duo behind this venture opened shop by giving away the first 1,000 cups of yogurt and glasses of smoothies, free.

So, when we climbed the steps towards the shop, we weren't surprised to see young things in shorts and mini-skirts squealing with delight over cups that held swirls of pink coloured yogurt. There were cushions placed on the steps outside, where others were sitting and eating happily from their cups.

Yogurt Bay offers five basic flavours of yogurt mango, strawberry, chocolate, banana and original. With these, they make eight signature preparations and a flavour of the day.

The day we visited them, the flavour of the day was Blueberry Cheesecake. With bits of blueberry mixed in the swirl, we loved how the crumb, an intrinsic part of your Blueberry Cheesecake, was also mixed in the yogurt.

The Chocolate Yogurt with sliced almond toppings was delicious, but that's probably because it wasn't too sweet or too chocolatey. A cocoa fiend might disapprove.

Mango lovers, however, would nod multiple times over Jack Sparrow the cheapest of the eight signature dishes priced at Rs 120. Made of mango yogurt, it has fresh pieces of mango served as topping, along with ingenious little fruit poppers. "The Jack Sparrow has been made keeping the kids in mind," said Jhaveri.

"We tried to make signatures keeping certain sections of the clientele in mind. For instance, the Strawbella, made of strawberry yogurt, candyfloss and muffin, has heart-shaped glitter sprinkled over the cup, which is tied in a pink ribbon. That's for the girls," he added.

The Strawbella we tried didn't have or need the glitter and the ribbon. Once again, we were impressed with the muted sweetness of the yogurt and the fresh and tangy taste of the strawberry pieces that were served as topping.

The smoothies were cool but not as thick as we'd like. However, there are seven interestingly named flavours up on the wall for you to try ('Kiss me I'm Irish', 'Johnny Bravo' being some). All have been priced at a decent Rs 95.

What we like is that the swirls of yogurt come in four different sizes and the smallest (the mini) isn't an ant size offering. It's also priced at an affordable Rs 35. The other sizes are small, regular and share cup.

If you don't fancy the signature flavours, you can create your own cup. Choose your own flavours and toppings to go with it.

There is everything from fresh fruit (papaya, mango, strawberries) to fruit poppers, M&Ms, chocolate sticks and hazelnut fudge. These are priced at Rs 10 for regular and Rs 20 for premuim topping.

Yogurt Bay also has an interesting breakfast item on its menu. The parfaits are served in a glass and consist of layers of yogurt, granola bar and fresh fruit. We like our eggs and bacon a bit too much, but may be one day we'll reach Carter Road early enough to try the parfait. One day.
