“The course has been created, primarily, to strengthen animal welfare activists’ understanding of legal procedures that govern animal abuse, animal cruelty as well as illegal wildlife trade issues. It was found that while animal activists were brimming with zeal to investigate such cases, their lack of sound legal understanding was often posing a roadblock in their investigation endeavours. Hence, we hope that through this training programme, we are able to equip these activists with sufficient knowledge to pursue strong legal recourse on animal welfare issues,” says Chemudupati Samyukta, Campaign Manager — Wildlife, Humane Society International (India).
The programme will be offered through NALSAR Law University, Hyderabad, and is an intensive five-day residential course. The Animal Welfare Board of India has funded the entire programme. Hence, the only cost that participants are required to bear is their travel to and from Hyderabad. Sharing more about the course content, Samyukta says that the course will cover the basics of the Indian criminal justice system with strong focus on procedures of investigation and in-depth understanding of the provisions of animal welfare-related laws such as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Wild (life) ProtectionAct, 1972.
The main prerequisite for admission to the course is that the participants must be experienced animal welfare activists with at least five years of animal welfare work experience behind them. “Their work as animal welfare activists must focus on investigation of animal cruelty issues and they must have the ability to translate this information for other activists within their own local circles,” says the campaign manager.
Course duration: November 27 to December 1;
At: NALSAR Law University, Medchal Road, Justice City, Shamirpet, Hyderabad.
