Cinema buffs will draw new meaning at Patrick Rimoux's inspired installations, Light Patterns of Cinema

Reflect, inspire
"Rimoux has actually scratched patterns and painted on the 35 mm film, glued them together and finally put it between plexi glass. We have placed the works with a gap of ten inches from the wall such that light passes through the film and creates a reflection on the wall," says Matthieu Foss, owner of Matthieu Foss Gallery where this installation is being showcased.

Rimoux has used strips from various movies and has named his works using a few interesting titles including Pardesi Babu and Naka Bandi. Rimoux has selected sections according to the base colour they would provide such as one painting has strips of a part of the movie which is a sunset dance scene, hence he gets a red background through it.

Light the world
Rimoux, an admirer of Satyajit Ray, had his first rendezvous with the Bollywood culture during his trip to Chennai in 2006. The artist, who is a light specialist, has earned global recognition after being commissioned by France, Quebec, and South Africa to produce the monument celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights.

Along with former South African President Nelson Mandela, Rimoux has produced the Freedom Towers found in the heart of Soweto, the symbol of South African multiculturalism. This apart he has highlighted the French Embassy on 5th Avenue in New York and the French Consulate and Quebec's City Hall as a part of the the 400th anniversary of the city.

Till: November 30 AT Matthieu Foss Gallery, Ground Floor Hansraj Damodar Trust building, before St John the Evangelist Church, Goa Street, Ballard Estate. (Sundays closed)
