Lunch with colleagues

Lunch times at office are the times when you can relax and enjoy yourself over food and company. Following simple, universally accepted rules can make it smoother for you and your colleagues to enjoy it even better. Here are a few reminders:

Know your manners: Following lunch etiquette will gain you brownie points

>>
u00a0u00a0If a colleague mentions that they are off to buy lunch andu00a0 are willing to take orders from others, make sure that you always pay for your own meal after you've had lunch. It is very easy to let it slip out of your mind, but remembering to pay people back is considered to be a great virtue. This will help to promote goodwill in the office.

>>u00a0If you order from a delivery point, ask around if anyone else would like to add to the order. The same goes for buying office snacks; maybe everyone wants to put in to a collection every week for cookies etc. It is best to make an offer and not feel awkward later.

>>u00a0If you are carrying lunch to work (it's a very good thing to do), keep in mind that the reality of lunch aromas in a closed, air-conditioned space is starkly different. When you are sitting to eat in an area that does not have windows that you can open, the odours emanating from your lunch box hits people more strongly than if you were sitting in a well-ventilated room. So, beware of strong fish or chicken curries, radishes, dried fish, salmon, etc.
While it is indeed best to carry your home cooked lunch to work, it is also advisable to carry to office food that will be less interfering in terms of its smells.

>>u00a0Having said that, in case your colleague has brought a dish of something that is strongly fragrant, it will be
polite not to react in a way that embarrasses him or her. You have the right to refuse if offered, but no right to offend the tastes of others.

>>u00a0Speaking of community eating, there are a couple of things you can check about yourself. For instance, do you make too much noise while chewing? Do you drop too much food on the table as you take your spoonfuls? Do you rush back to work immediately after lunch without helping out with the clearing up? Being sensitive to things such as these goes a long way in creating an impression over others.
