If you're setting up your dream home or refurbishing it on a budget, you can either go in for a completely co-ordinated look or try a magpie look. Choose between an avant garde or a traditional and elegant Victorian styled look or opt for eccentric objects d'art, quirky bric-a-brac and funky decor. And if you're one of those busy people always on the move, then make sure the decor is maintenance free. iTalk looks around stores in town to help you put together a new look for your home this summer.

Anita Kholay, a car rallyist who has spent considerable energy and effort doing up her dream home, says, "When we saw this 3000 sq ft penthouse, we instantly knew it was our dream home. We wanted to do the interiors our way. My husband Rupesh and I decided the look for every room and got the woodwork done. Our kitchen is in black and white. It's a modular kitchen. I have done the living room in beige and gold. My son's room has a picture gallery of his milestones. The motifs are cars and bikes. They are everywhere from the lampshades to the wardrobe handles. I have made a special place foru00a0 miniatures and souvenirs collected on trips in India and abroad. For someone who's doing up a home, I would recommend lively paintings. Lights also play an important role. Choose quality lights and you will feel the difference.

This interior designer's home reflects elegance all the way. Arati Sud, who has been dabbling with interior design, recommends stores like The Vintage Shop, Wood and Wicker, and Cane Boutique for furniture. For furnishings, she would go to an upmarket store like Atmosphere on Vittal Mallya Road. "If you are shopping on a fixed budget, then try Drapes Avenue," she says. "I collect artifacts when I travel and I make sure they find a place in my home. Thar art gallery's new store on HAL Airport Road and the Cottage Emporium on MG Road have some lovely knick-knacks. For an elegant touch, try the Swarovski curios. I'd advise people to shop for lights in Delhi, but if you have to buy locally, there are several stores on Avenue Road and Lady Curzon Road," she adds.
