Mumbai gets a Ray of light

The Satyajit Ray film festival organised by The Taj Enlighten Film Society will be showcasing two classics – Pather Panchali and Jalsaghar – at a city theatre over the weekend.

The two films are deemed as some of the best works of the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. “We are getting the films on 35 mm print from National Film Archive of India and the two prints are in very good condition,” informs Ronak Dixit, the organiser of the festival. When asked about the number of films being screened (only two), he explains, “These are classics. We wanted to show films on 35 mm prints to give the audience the feel of watching the original film. We did not want to just get DVDS and show them.”

Before each of the screenings there will be a small introduction to Satyajit Ray and the film. Pather Panchali is the story of a young boy called Apu, born in a small Brahmin family in Bengal. The film looks at his life and the daily struggles of his family. The setting and the style of Ray’s filmmaking has made this film one of the most popular Ray films ever. Jalsaghar, on the other hand, is a film about a zamindar, who is the last of his kind. Though he is not as rich as his predecessors, he struggles to maintain the lifestyle of a zamindar, till he loses most of his money and is reduced to poverty.
