Hasn't a global warming message been cryptic enough for us Indians? Hundreds of movies about the world coming to an end because of our own stupidity; excellence at creating waste resulting in global warming not sent out that signal loud and clear? Or the floods and the drought we face every year in the city not given a wake-up call?
PGs, car rentals and especially telecommunication companies selling broadband and cell phone connections are the biggest culprits. The trees outside my house have been unfortunate to be on the corner of a crossing. I yell at almost five promoters every day (some get away), when they try and staple the advertisement on the tree.
I always threaten them that I will nail it to their heads if they touch the tree. Most of the time it scares these promoters away. We only have to stand up and say so. They scurry like rats because they are not supposed to be doing that in the first place.
I remember when the Mumbai Municipality started this drive and began charging people a bomb for hanging up posters and banners everywhere and obstructing views and traffic. People scurried. And mind it till today there is no one who dares hang a banner outside their shop announcing their wares.
So what is it that is stopping the Bangalore Municipality to take up the cause for the voiceless trees... our saviour of life? And moreover what is stopping you and me from tearing off these sheets and drilling it into the person's head? (If not the ad then atleast the idea. Shame them often enough and they will stop) I know it will take more than saving trees to save the world now. But atleast it's a start somewhere. When trees get nailed you will find often enough that it wilts and dries off after a couple of attacks and ultimately dies an untimely death.
Are we so blind? We better wake up soon or we will have hammered the last nail on our own coffins (which also by the way comes from wood...aka trees!).
