Tamasha Na Hua takes inspiration from Tagore's Muktadhara and raises questions that are still relevant in today's society

Emancipation from the bondage of the soil is no freedom for the tree, said Rabindranath Tagore. That thought, which was penned down a century back, is still relevant. Although we are free from bondages of the world, we are stuck with the bondages of our narrow minds. This is the very base of the play Tamasha Na Hua as it pays a tribute to the Nobel-laureate on his 150th anniversary.

Tamasha Na Hua is based on Tagore's masterpiece Muktadhara and gives the audience the concept of a play within a play. In the play, the actors who are rehearsing for Muktadhara end up discussing its relevance in the present time. The discussion later turns into a heated argument and talks about the day to day issues that rule our lives.

Muktadhara highlighted some of the repressing issues during 1920s and revolved around the agony of people when they are denied access to water after a ruler from a different land builds a dam on a waterfall that provides water to their region. As an analogy, Tamasha Na Hua focuses on the problems of the people of Bangladesh after building of the Farraka barrage on the Ganges. It heaved disaster for the inhabitants, largely affecting their livelihood which was mainly agriculture and fishing. Similarly, the construction of Baglihar dam on the river Chenab led to sour relations with Pakistan. The play also talks about the effects of free economy and consumerism on the society. It investigates Tagore and Gandhian philosophy, questioning the
freedom of man in today's scenario.

Bhanu Bharti, director of Tamasha Na Hua, says: "Tagore had an interrogative and alert mind. Today we have surpassed the ideologies and philosophies that once existed. This play is for anyone who is interested in the plight of mankind. It is an effort to raise questions of relevance."
