Most pet owners have a constant worry nagging them at the back of their minds. That the commercially produced food they feed their pets might be seeped in preservatives possibly harmful to their pet's health. And more so when you read the ingredients used to make these treats, you can't make sense of half of them. And if you are a working pet parent, then you usually end up not having time to cook for your pet everyday. Subha K, (29) a former IT company employee faced similar problems too with her dog Princess. Over and above the problems mentioned above, Princess was also a fussy eater.

"Just like anxious mothers worry about the kind of nutrition they are giving their children, I would worry about what was going into my dog's stomach and how healthy it was. Most people think store bought treats are good enough to fulfill the nutritional requirement of dogs but what they forget is that it is usually thick with preservatives," says Subha.

u00a0When Subha became pregnant in 2009, she found the time to start researching for designingu00a0 a meal plan that would ensure healthy, nutritious home cooked food for dogs without preservatives. She tried and tested it on Princess. In January 2010, she started Pet's Dhaba on a small scale. After a good response, she designed a website to make the business more commercial. Today Pet's Dhaba supplies home cooked meals to pets all over Bangalore and feeds roughly 50 to 55 dogs in a month.

What's the plan?
Under the dabba system there are two kinds of plans that pet owners can go for. One is the Regular plan where two meals in a day are supplied and comprise rice, boneless chicken or mutton or egg with vegetables mixed up with curd or buttermilk. If the dog has a special dietary requirement, needs to lose weight or watch its diet for health requirements, then chapattis or oats are given in the meal.

The Premier meal plan includes the Regular meal along with salads, snacks and delicacies. Under the Premier plan, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, snacks, salads, pastas and macaroni are part of the goodie bag.

On Sundays, a special kheer sweetened with honey is part of the delicacy meal.u00a0 There's even a vegetarian meal plan made up of paneer, fruits, nuts, veggies, mix of cereals and milk to provide a balanced diet. Pet's Dhaba also keeps track of the calorie intake of the pet by balancing out the treats and the original meal and keeping it to 100 to 150 grams per serving. No sugar, salt or oil is used in the cooking. These meal plans are available for puppies and adult dogs.

It's all in the details
When a client approaches Pet's Dhaba, the first thing they have to do is to fill out a registration form that asks questions about their pet's sex, health, eating habits, activity levels and the kind of environment they live in (apartment or house). Then once the details are in, Subha suggests that the client try out her meal for at least a week to see if the diet is working for their pets or not. There are fortnightly and monthly meal plans too.

Subha also provides a homsestay for dogs when their owners might be travelling. Instead of being put into kennels here the dogs have the freedom to roam around and live in a bigger house with enough space to stretch out. The only requirement: your pet has to be of a good temperament. She even arranges for doggie parties where you can bring in your dog and his pals and use the Pet's Dhaba space for a little party for your furry friends.
