Once upon a time in Shalimar

If you have a leaning for lip-smacking, butter-inspired fare from the traditional Muslim kitchens of the good old days, iconic restaurant Shalimar's second outlet in Andheri is where you should head

For over two decades, the iconic Shalimar Restaurant in Bhendi Bazaar has maintained a good standard of food. It is always packed with people, jostling to get a seat. Now, this landmark opens its Mughal doors in Andheri with the promise of similar treatment.

All the food preparations are ritualistically undertaken and created as per the traditional family recipes. To test these claims, we start with the Mix Veg (Rs 89) Turns out the sacred traditions are maintained. Each bite proves to be an interesting concoction of carrots, beans, peas, and cauliflower the essential spirit and methodology is all there.

Reshmi Paratha

Alas, the Pahadi Kabab (Rs 234) was a slight disappointment. An interesting combination of mint, coriander leaves, garlic and ginger cannot go wrong. But the end result made the chicken taste as if it had lost its sheen. Plus, there was a residue of oil and spice, which didn't please the palate.

Nevertheless, we were willing to forgive, if the main course redeemed itself. And redeem, it did. When the Butter Chicken-Boneless (Rs 144), arrived, we were left licking our fingers. The deliciously tasty gravy was soaked in a healthy marination of garam masala. It had a rich, subtle undertone emanating from the juices that permeated the sauce.

The only issue with the dish was that it was too salty. Coupled with delicious melt-in-your-mouth Reshmi Paratha (Rs 32) that was served crispy and with several layers of smouldering butter, it is recommended as the perfect accompaniment to the glorious Butter Chicken.

For dessert, the Caramel Custard (Rs 39) didn't disappoint. The light and tasty caramel custard was perfectly smattered with caramelised sugar, with the right quantities of eggs, milk, and vanilla.
