Advertising professional Jayesh Sachdev (30) met NIFT alumnus Rixi Bhatia (30) at the Young Creative Entrepreneur Awards by the British Council in 2010, where they were both finalists. At the time, Sachdev was running the contemporary art and design studio Emblem, while Bhatia was involved in her garment label Half Full. Despite hectic schedules and prior commitments, the duo decided to start their own label. On 1.1.11 (January 1, 2011), garments (dresses, jackets, shorts), accessories (stoles, totes, wallets), stationery (notebooks) and other items (mugs, ashtrays) were made available under their label: Quirkbox.

The designs
The digitally printed design template includes the Animal Farm series, which includes outlines of horses and elephants filled in with bold colours and kitschy designs. Their most popular series, 'Minions', features 14 caricatures, including a south Indian, a sardar, a pirate and a Mexican. There is a series on vintage cars and another called Ice Cream Factory (Sachdev's personal favourite), which has pop art images with sensual undertones, including a half-eaten apple, sultry eyes and an open mouth.
"We wanted the brand to be artistically driven and feature fun, original designs that break away from Bollywood and Hollywood themes. The designs are limited edition and one-of-a-kind," says Sachdev, adding that they cater to Indian sensibilities, but have a global appeal. Sachdev, who holds the national record for painting India's largest concept artwork, a new-media artwork (40ft x 40ft) using impressions of a Fiat 500 vehicle, is the creative head for accessory design and strategy at Quirkbox while Bhatia handles fashion strategy and design.
"I used to paint on canvas, and saw this (painting on different surfaces), as a way of making my designs more accessible to a wider section of people," he adds. Future plans include expansion to cities such as Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.
