You're cool about splurging on pricey spirits but don't give a second thought to drab bar accessories that take the sheen off your prized mini-bar. Mumbai-based brand Wasted Fish decided to add a dash of quirk and pizzazz to shot glasses, decanters and wine bottle openers for a stylish, hic-happy tipple
A lot can happen over your favourite tipple, as Chandni Shahani (30) and Imran Rizvi (27) realised. In January, when the duo were in Goa partying with friends, a Eureka moment struck them. "We realised there are fewer options as far as bar accessories go. So, if you are ready to spend thousands over a bottle of wine, why should you have to end up serving it in run-of-the-mill glasses?" explains Rizvi.
Drink like a fish game
Spurred by this idea they scoured local markets for bar products that could be a permanent keepsake but found few options. "While there are foreign brands that provide such products, these seem alien in an Indian context," added Rizvi.
In March, the duo finally launched Wasted Fish, a one-stop-shop for every conceivable bar accessory, on Facebook. "The initial 500 members were our extended group of friends. Within a week, our account almost crashed due to the sudden surge making Facebook wonder if ours was a fake site," laughs Shahani, adding that side-by-side she juggles her commitment to her film studio and Rizvi handles his event management company.
Fishy business
The name Wasted Fish was a simple combination of the terms "wasted" (meaning drunk) and "drink like a fish". "Our range of products are keepsakes and are for people, like us, who like their drink but also have a love affair with their bar accessories. They make for excellent gifts as well," adds Rizvi.
Wasted Fish offers a line-up of items including signature shot glasses with slogans borrowed from Hindi songs and lines such as, 'If you're happy and you know it, slap your friend'. They also have wine glass bouquets, which feature colourful hand-blown glasses shaped like tulip bulbs as well as tilted shot glasses. They also sell chrome goblets and flutes that have been treated for a metallic look.
Also on offer are matchboxes with poster-art designs as well as wine racks and decanters. Quirk lovers will appreciate the Pee Ashtray (shaped like a potty with liquid dousing the flames) as well as the Shoe Stoppers (stiletto-shaped wine stoppers).
Hic hic hooray
Our pick were the alcohol games. Yes, these are simple games where the rules have been modified to focus on alcohol (for example, drinking shots when you lose or from a certain coloured glass). Test your skills with Tic Tac Toe, Bingo, Booze Ball, Ludo, Shooters and Ladders and Ship Wrecked.
The raw materials for most of their products are sourced from China, Ireland and London while the patented designs are produced in Mumbai by local artisans. Shahani and Rizvi plan to replenish their stock every three months. So expect glasses shaped like a rugby ball, half yard ale glasses, beer glass booths and mini-bars over the next few months. Also, on the cards is a flagship store by the end of the year.
Tipple tip
