Shruti Singhal's graduation project on sex education for kids was so well- appreciated that her institute is now going to publish the book and distribute it among schools

Sex-education, the fun way

It was an episode of Aamir Khan’s popular show Satyamev Jayate that caught the attention of Shruti Singhal for her graduation project. Singhal, a student of BA Hons of Communication Design at Pearl Academy, was shocked to see the episode on sexual abuse in the show.

“ They explained how most children who have been abused are under eight years old,” says Singhal, who was provoked into doing something for the cause.

The result? A book called Our Bodies written and illustrated by the 22- year- old, that explains in the simplest of ways, the basics of our bodies.

It also helps explain the difference between ‘ good touch and ‘ bad touch’. “ I had to do a lot of research.

Not only did I have to understand the attitude and behaviour of parents when they give sex education to their children, but also the psyche of the kids and how they react to their bodies,” says the Delhi resident, who conducted workshops in schools in order to interact closely with kids.

“ Initially, they were shy but gradually, they spoke freely about their bodies,” she says.

Her institute has decided to now go ahead and publish it with the view to spread the word across as far as possible.

“ Her project was related to a cause that’s extremely important today,” says Nandita Abraham, senior vice president — corporate relations and marketing, Pearl Academy, “ We will be publishing it next year. We aim to distribute it across free of cost to schools all over India.” Already, many schools in Mumbai including Podar High School, Billabong High and Kangaroo Kids have introduced sex education.

It’s the first time that the Academy is going to publish the work of any student and needless to say, they are very proud of what she has achieved.

As for its creator, Singhal says she had no idea her project would gather so much momentum. “ I never thought it will turn out so well,” she smiles.
