A short guide by Jaison Lewis on how to play your favourite PlayStation videogames on your computer using an Emulator

Tech: PlayStation on my PC

What is an Emulator?
An Emulator is a software that emulates the hardware required to run games from another platform. This lets users play games of proprietary consoles that have been long been discontinued. While most of these emulators don't need a graphic card, the PS3 one works better with a decent graphics card. It is recommended that you download images of games you physically own so you are not breaking any copyright or any piracy laws.

PS3
This was released in 2006 and is still freely available for purchase in India. The console has managed to squeeze out some brilliant gaming titles and with the new emulators out you can play a decent chunk of the 2000+ games available on the platform. Installation and running of an image file is pretty straight forward on RPCS3 though you will need to download a system firmware and other extras for which the guide must be used.

Some must play compatible titles include Braid, Catherine, Katamari Forever, Marvel vs Capcom, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2.

PSP
It gave tough competition to the reigning king of handheld (Nintendo), selling more than 25 million units worldwide. The console was discontinued in 2014. There are over 800 PSP games out there and, while the compatibility list may see a few tried and tested games, it is best to try others yourself. PPSSPP is the easiest to use on the list, just download the emulator and get a PSP image file from one of your games to run the Emulator. The default configuration runs out of the box. Some must-play compatible games include Patapon 3, Burnout Legends, Lumines, Final Fantasy Tactics and Persona 3 Portable.

PSOne
PlayStation One planted Sony firmly on the videogame scene. The console was released in 1994 and was available till 2005, a whole five years after they launched the PlayStation. During its lifetime, there were over 2,000 games titles that were released, so that's a huge library to go through. The ePSXe application is tried and tested and compatible with several games. However, installation is a bit of an annoyance as the user needs to find and install PsOne BIOS files that you will need to find yourself. Some recommended games include Metal Gear Solid, Twisted Metal 3, Final Fantasy VII and Tekken 3.

PS2
The PlayStation 2 was released in 2000 and is considered one of the bestselling videogame consoles of all time with over 155 million units. The console has over 3,800 titles to choose from and you can still find one in stores if you search hard enough, even though they stopped production in 2013. If you can't find one you can always rely on our emulator to do the job.

While the PCSX2 software is simple to use, you will need to download a PS2 BIOS for things to work, just like you did for the PSOne. A Google search and the listed guide should make things easier for you.

Some recommended PS2 games include Kingdom Hearts I & II, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Final Fantasy X and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
