The bi-annual Paramparik Karigar exhibition is back in the city. This time around you can choose from enamel jewellery to Phad paintings

How better to begin the New Year than find articles for home and yourself, and support the traditional arts in the country. On January 6, the popular Paramparik Karigar, an association of craftsmen, is bringing their bi-annual exhibition to Juhu.

The exhibition will be divided into two sections, one for art and craft (January 6 to 9) and the other for textile (January 11 to 14). There will be a wide variety of articles for purchase, from traditional paintings and sculptures to ceramic pots and jewellery. Prices of products will range from Rs 20 to Rs 20,000.

Hilla Divecha, chairperson of the Paramparik Karigar (PK) exhibition says there is something for everyone. "This time there are certain types of traditional Maharashtrian gold jewellery that have never been part of PK's exhibitions before. There is also a whole new collection of products made from horns and shells from West Bengal."

Bidri pots from Karnataka

Among the many products, Divecha picks Gadwakam metal castings from Chattisgarh, Phad paintings from Rajasthan, and Bidri artwork (traditionally from Karnataka) as some of her favourites. Gadwakam castings are an ancient form of metal casting done in the tribal areas of Bastar in Chattisgarh.

The technique has survived since prehistoric times and is now used to make religious images, ritualistic items and objects of utility. Phad paintings are done on large pieces of cloth and they tell stories of folk deities. Bidri artworks originated in Bidar, Karnataka, in the 14th century and the metal used is a blackened alloy of zinc and copper inlaid with thin sheets of silver.

There will be 24 stalls in the art and craft exhibition and 26 stalls in the textiles show. Also present will be craftsmen, who will man the stalls and be more than willing to answer your queries.
