The reel world beyond feature films

With 793 entries and 32 participating countries, the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) for documentary, short and animation films, has grown bigger and better. Currently in its 13th year, the festival will be kickstarting today at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA).

“Non-feature films are hard to get in India, which limits our exposure to formats like documentary and short films. The festival aims to fill this gap and provide quality non-feature films to filmmakers and students ,” says Nitin Sapre, an official from the Films Division.

The festival, therefore, will not only be screening the national competition films at the festival venue, but also in select theatres across India. “This year, we are trying to reach out to film lovers who are unable to travel to Mumbai for MIFF,” says Sapre, adding, “Even the festival passes are kept as low as '50 (for students) and '100 (public).”
The festival has also added a new section, titled Good Pitch, which aims to nurture new talent and approaches to documentary filmmaking.

The festival will also confer the V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement award, which includes a cash prize of '5 lakhs to Anand Patwardhan, maker of award-winning documentary films like Jai Bhim Comrade and War and Peace among others, and also one of the jury members at the festival.
