Shopaholics can partake the best of the old and the new by heading to the Paramparik Karigar exhibition of traditional artefacts by award-winning artists and Urban Studio that highlights artists who use Indian techniques and materials to render fresh, urbanised designs

Over a span of 15 years, the Paramparik Karigar exhibitions have put the spotlight on Indian craftsmanship to create an awareness of traditional art forms. They are back for the second consecutive year with an exhibition of 12 forms of traditional Indian art by 14 National Award-winning artists.

Titledu00a0 Collectors Dream 'Paramparik Karigar', the exhibition will feature exclusive paintings and sculptures including Pattachitra, stone sculptures and palm leaf etchings from Orissa, Gond art from Madhya Pradesh, Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh, Mithila art from Bihar, Pichwai cloth paintings, miniature and Phad paintings from Rajasthan, Patua paintings from Bengal, Mata Ni Pachedi from Gujarat and bronze sculptures from Karnataka.

Speaking about the exhibition, Anu Chowdhury, committee member of Paramparik Karigar, says, "The artists have been working on the pieces for this exhibition for an extended periodu00a0 as some of the works shown can take upto four months to make. Look out for some wonderful Madhubani paintings and papier mache artefacts, Pachedi cloth art from Ahmedabad and Gond tribal paintings from Madhya Pradesh."

The event will be inaugurated today with a traditional Phad performance, a traditional dance form of Rajasthan. Phad paintings are traditionally used as the visual backdrop for night-long performances of the epics, in Rajasthan.

The Bhopa or storyteller points to the scenes on the canvas with an oil lamp as he sings the story. At this event, stage actress Anahita Uberoi will give a synopsisu00a0 of each piece performed in English.
