Artist Manohar Gangan is presenting photographs culled from his trips to Bhamragad village located in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. It was earlier part of Maharashtra's Chandrapur district and became a separate district by itself in 1982. It is known for its association with Naxals as its mountains and forests have been convenient shelters for them. The area is also known for its significant adivasi populace.
Images from the Bhamragad series focus on village life
Gangan has chosen to fuse the old worldly customs and lifestyle of the adivasis with modern-day photography and computer effects to create a unique collection of photographs. The images provide a glimpse into the day to day life of the tribals and the harsh realities of poverty. The photos resemble paintings in certain ways due to the special effects given to them.
The artist admits to have been inspired by Baba Amte and his philosophy of humanity. Gangan admits that his aim is to get people to get a real look at the tribals without the blindfold of prejudiced opinions. While most images serve the purpose of beautifying a place or surrounding, Gangan has chosen to go the other way and make the place seem harsher than usual.u00a0
