After seeing his friends struggle throughout college to pay fees for submitting their films at various film festivals, 22-year-old Jigar Chawda has launched an online film festival — Lights Camera Action (LCA) with a submission fee of just Rs 50.

The festival has already received close to 100 entries, and a selected few of them will be screened online on February 28.

“Many of my friends who are creative and talented were never able to submit their films to any film festival because they came from financially weak backgrounds, and submission fees (R1,500-R2,000) was too steep for them,” says Chawda, a BMM graduate from Viva College, Virar.

The festival will screen around 15-20 short films and documentaries, each of a duration of 15-20 minutes with a selection of television commercials (TVCs) (30 seconds) on social issues such as child labour. The films will be judged on the basis of direction, concept and editing with a separate section that focuses on creativity in filmmaking.

The young graduate, who now runs his own production company, Fairy Entertainment, sees the festival as a platform for everyone with an inkling towards filmmaking and to showcase their works, irrespective of the budget.

“You will be surprised to hear this, but one of the entries, a 30-second TVC, is made from Google images. The execution is superb and shows high level of creativity. This is what LCA is all about,” he summarises.
