A pleasant gastronomical journey on all counts at the newly-opened Soy Street in Vashi means more good news for Navi Mumbai's foodies
When we entered Inorbit mall at Vashi and when we noticed that Soy Street stood at the same place that housed Lemon Grass until about a month ago, we were a tad bit perplexed. On stepping in, the puzzle continued. We spotted that the owners hadn’t changed either. Once we chatted up with them it became clear to us that they had decided to start a new restaurant in place of its earlier avatar, and that was how Soy Street happened.

The décor of this South-East Asian restaurant was beautiful, with lively illustrations of Chinese men in traditional attire and scenes from daily life in China. It had comfortable seating as well as an al fresco section. We seated ourselves and ordered our drinks — the chef recommended fresh Watermelon Cooler (Rs 150) and Sinful Soy Street Red Summer Sangria (Rs 250). The Watermelon Cooler looked and tasted great. With the perfect salt and sweet combination, it was better than any watermelon juice we’ve tried before. The Sangria impressed too.
What we loved about the place was that apart from the staff, who wore warm smiles, owner and chef mingled with the customers, giving their recommendations and receiving feedback. It had a very friendly vibe and most of the guests seemed in good spirits.
Our starters were Oriental Butter Garlic Prawns (Rs 255) and a Shitake Mushroom Dumpling (Rs 195). The giant prawns were succulent; they were served in a coating of garlic and spices, and tasted great. By now, we were enjoying ourselves, as the experience kept getting better. The Barbeque Cottage Cheese and Vegetable Skewers (Rs 260), which were again the chef’s recommendation, was delicious. The paneer was tender and served with a slightly sweet salad and some potatoes.
Moving on to the mains, we ordered the Burnt Garlic Spinach Rice (Rs 130) and Buddha’s Delight (Rs 195) for gravy. The green gravy with a generous amount of vegetables tasted great. The Chicken Penang Laksa (Rs 325), that arrived next, was a yummy coconut-flavoured broth with several vegetables, making for a healthy meal.
Despite being full to the brim, we ended our treat with a sinful Chocolate Lava Cake (Rs 149), summing up our rather pleasant Chinese rendezvous.
