Facebook-owned instant-messaging client WhatsApp, had announced in August this year of its decision to pass on users' information to its parent company. According to a report by Mirror, although the controversial announcement sparked furore, WhatsApp nevertheless remains the most downloaded app, not just on Android but also on Apple iOS.
WhatsApp remains the most downloaded app with one billion active users in 2016, making it the most popular chat client in the world. It even topped iOS App Store's download charts this year.
In August, WhatsApp has updated its global privacy policy, under which it aimed to share phone numbers of users with its parent company, Facebook. Privacy advocates had raised concerns that Facebook would start mining WhatsApp accounts for data. However, both the companies have maintained that WhatsApp would operate separately from the parent company and that its user data would not be shared without users' consent. (Click here to read more)
WhatsApp recently rolled out two new features on the Android platform, namely the streaming of shared videos without requiring to download them and Animated GIF support, both of which were only available on the beta versions.
The video streaming feature, gives the user an option to decide whether he/she wishes to download the full video or not. The Animated GIF support, which was initially rolled out on WhatsApp Android beta in August, it enables users to convert a 6-second video to an animated GIF and share it with contacts.
