Sahitya Kala Parishad brings to you the play 'Andha Yug' after a gap of almost five decades IN an attempt to make Delhiites appreciate the tragedy of human existence and the failure of mankind to live happily together, Sahitya Kala Parishad, is staging Andha Yug in the Capital from October 15-19. Set in the backdrop of the epicu00a0 the Mahabharata, the play stages the evening of the final day of the war. <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2011/oct/play.jpg" border="5" /> A scene from the play "This is a classic play that beautifully outlines the fact that every act of violence inevitably debases not just the affected individuals but society at large as well," says Shekhar Vaishnavi, secretary, Sahitya Kala Parishad. On being asked for the need of staging this play, Shekhar says, "This is an attempt to popularise Indian theatre among the younger generation. Youngsters today seem to have withdrawn from the world of theatre. Through Andha Yug, we hope to enhance the interest level of both youngsters and general audience towards this wonderful medium." Bhanu Bharti, the director of the play, who feels that the Mahabharata is a saga of destruction and that it's significant in modern times as well, says, "This play is an allegory of the pathos and feeling of hopelessness felt by millions across the globe, as violence and hatred have seeped deeply into the social fabric of various countries. u00a0 Though its pretext is that of the historical events that took place during the Mahabharata, it accurately captures the sentiments of loss as felt by both the victim and the victor, in modern times too. So, through this play, I am pointing towards the flaws of human psyche, which, in spite of so many examples from the past, never seems to learn the lesson and repeats the same mistakes again and again." "We are focussing on the plight of the characters - how they lose everything in the war. In the end, it didn't matter who won or lost, basic humanity was affected by their actions," says Teekam Joshi, who plays the role of Ashwathama in the play. Talking about the character he's playing, he elaborates, "Ashwathama wanders into the forest, sad because of his father's death. And then the focus shifts to how he meets the Kauravas and chooses the wrong path to get revenge." Don't miss this. After all, life is an epic drama.
