A Mumbai-based music buff wants to sync good tunes in your life with a weekly musical newsletter

Yooti Bhansali

Few years ago, Yooti Bhansali heard Scottish Folk singer Rachel Sermanni at a live gig. She thought it was an "intimate acoustic performance where she had filled up every corner of the room with her amazing voice and her guitar." So, of course, Bhansali, had to share the song, The Fog, with friends.

The track from the singer's debut EP thus finds a place in Bhansali's musical newsletter. What's a musical newsletter, you ask? It's a weekly letter from the 32-year-old freelance writer and editor, filled with reccos for some interesting music from around the world. "Once a week, I take stock of all the music I've been listening to and send it out to people," says Kalina-based Bhansali, who has been following music since she was five. Her latest newsletter has five songs — Fences by Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Love in the Ruins by French Kicks, Take 'Em Up by Sh*t Robot and Skyscrapers by OK Go. And, each song comes with a small noted explaining the choice, from watching the artiste perform live to being introduced to the songs by a roommate.

"I am obsessed with music. I will spend hours going from one song to the other, looking up new artistes and listening to all their work. Over time, friends would approach me for suggestions of new songs to listen to. Then, on Twitter too, I got into the habit of recommending music," she says. It's been just 10 weeks and Bhansali already has 200 subscribers. The newsletter contains YouTube links and once a month, Bhansali also shares her current playlist. She doesn't have a particular theme, genre or type, just music she has heard and liked.
