With Facebook suicides and the famous quitting Twitter, is oversharing already taking a toll? FYI asks if secrecy is back on the wanted list of those who once craved virtual contact

Our parents told us that the first thing you do in the morning is brush your teeth. But had they known that Facebook would come out with a super-solid game called Farmville and Twitter would help us follow our favourite stars, they would have trained us to start our day by harvesting strawberries, updating our status messages, following Sonam Kapoor on Twitter and checking our list of recent visitors on Orkut. Social networking sites do their best to get Gen Y hooked on but what they never tell their users is that more and more people are getting concerned about content sharing and privacy protocols.

Should you accept every friend request so that one-day your profile is over crowded and you receive comments from every John and Jane? Is it really a prudent act to share you pin code, contact details, shift timings, photos, and videos? If you publish such details, with a tiny investigation, an unknown person can track you down and put you at risk. Some people who've fallen victim to over-trafficking on their profile, have either quit these sites or have gone dormant. If your profile too seems to have more junk than genuine friends then perhaps its time to keep a check on how much you reveal.

The famous Twitter-quitters
American singer, songwriter and actress Miley Cyrus who was once a regular Tweeter in an interview with B96 Chicago said " So great (quitting Twitter), I think everyone should delete their Twitter, I think Twitter should just be banned from the entire universe."
Summer Glau, the Terminator actress.u00a0u00a0
American filmmaker Seth MacFarlane's never returned after his first post on Twitter.
Filmmaker Judd Apatow. One of his posts meant, "In order to achieve success, you can't f**k around on a site like Twitter all day"
Larry David "What the hell is this thing? I'm supposed to tell you what I'm doing? Why would I tell you what I'm doing? What are you doing?"

One of the main reasons why people quit networking portals or become inactive is because of identity theft. There have been cases where pictures from a user's profile were used to create similar but fake profile on other such portals just to befriend the primary user's friends. Other fears among users is that of spammers who often post links to malicious sites on your wall, which infect your and your friends' computers.

After I realised that Orkut is teeming with more people than it should, I deactivated my account. Then I shifted to Twitter and kept my account reasonably under wraps but quit it too as I thought it offered no privacy.u00a0

I don't see a reason to be on a social networking website. I have other modes to connect like mobile phones, email and coffee. Plus, I don't even have time that a website like Facebook expects from you.

To the rescue
An upcoming portal called www.twitterquitter.com claims to help people who are addicted to twitter.
