Couples planning a pregnancy post-35 must proceed with proper guidance and self-care practices in place involving regular check-ups with the fertility expert. With the right care, many women can successfully become mothers later in life.

Pregnancy after the age of 35 is commonly referred to as advanced maternal age. While it is natural to have concerns about potential risks and complications, it's important to remember that many women in this age group have healthy pregnancies and deliver perfectly healthy babies. However, there are a few key factors that prospective mothers should be aware of.

“Fertility declines as women get older, making it more difficult to conceive naturally. It may take longer for women over 35 to get pregnant compared to younger women, so seeking medical advice and considering fertility treatments might be wise,” says Dr Rupali Tambe, fertility consultant, Nova IVF Pune. After 30 years of age, the number and quality of eggs deteriorates.

Tambe shares key things couples planning for late pregnancies must consider. There are chances of preterm delivery in elderly women leading to low birth weight babies, and premature babies with suboptimal organ development which may lead to prolonged NICU admission for the baby.

Another important consideration is the increased risk of certain health conditions during pregnancy. Women over 35 have a higher likelihood of developing gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and chromosomal abnormalities in their babies such as Down Syndrome. It is important to discuss these risks with fertility consultants and undergo appropriate screenings to ensure both the health of the mother and baby before conceiving. Genetic screening tests can help identify such conditions early on during pregnancy.

Taking care of your overall health becomes even more crucial when planning for pregnancy at an advanced age. This includes maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, managing stress levels effectively, and avoiding harmful substances like tobacco or alcohol. While it's natural to worry about becoming a mother later in life due to societal pressures or personal reasons, it's essential not to allow these concerns to overshadow the joyous experience of preparing for motherhood.

In addition to physical considerations, emotional readiness is also crucial when planning a pregnancy after 35. As women grow older, they may have established careers or other life commitments that need careful balancing with the demands of motherhood. It's essential to evaluate personal circumstances and make decisions based on what feels right for both partners involved.

It is advisable to visit a fertility consultant before planning pregnancy so that you can be evaluated thoroughly and necessary hormonal or nutritional advice can be given. If a lady is diabetic or has high blood pressure then she can be shifted to pregnancy-safe medication.

Even if there are potential challenges associated with planning pregnancies after 35 due to declining fertility rates and increased health risks, consulting fertility experts on reproductive health can help navigate these concerns effectively.

Every individual is unique in their journey toward parenthood, so seeking a tailored treatment plan specifically according to one's circumstances can lead to informed decision-making regarding conception.
