As people observe World Thyroid Day on May 25 every year, city doctors say men need to pay attention to these signs to be able to deal with them in time

When we think of thyroid disorders, we often associate them with women. However, there’s more to the issue than meets the eye. According to Dr Piyush Lodha, a Pune-based endocrinologist, while it’s true that women are more likely to be diagnosed, men are by no means immune. He explains, “Thyroid issues in men are less commonly recognised. They are often misdiagnosed or entirely overlooked—sometimes until serious complications arise.”
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, mood and overall well-being. Each year, World Thyroid Day is observed on 25 May to raise awareness about thyroid disorders and encourage individuals to prioritise their health. The theme for 2025 is “Thyroid Disease and Artificial Intelligence,” highlighting the growing role of AI in diagnosing and treating these conditions.
Unfortunately, even as there may be better awareness about thyroid issues in women, it may not be the same case in men, as not many are convinced their issues could be thyroid related. In fact, Dr Pranav A Ghody, who is the endocrinologist at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai Central, says thyroid dysfunction often goes unnoticed in men because symptoms can mimic other conditions or be dismissed as stress or aging.
