Over the next few months, you'll see your local chaiwallah donning a swanky uniform, standing at a fancy stall and offering you cookies with tea. A tea stall owners' association, which has already set up similar stalls in Thane over the past two months, is now helping women open tea stalls and will soon enter the island city. Hygiene, unadulterated tea powder and happier chaiwallahs are on offer

In January last year, Bairag Mishra, a tea stall owner in Thane (west) had a strange visitor suggesting stranger things. Thirty two year-old Mishra frowned as 40 year-old Biju Nair spoke to him about joining a tea stall owners association which would give him a refurbished stall, educate him on better hygiene, and enable him to make more money.
