MiD DAY vroomed its way into the recently held Indian Bike Rally only to realise why women are the hot new biking favs

Whoever said biking wasn't a 'fair' deal should go take a hike. Lately, city girls have shown never-before interest in what was traditionally thought to be a man's sport -- cruising your mean machine through tough terrain zones. Delhi's daredevilry has developed a newfound feminine fetish, with many a man giving it a thumbs-up. The reasons are many.u00a0

Girls are getting gutsier by the day, and throwing caution to the winds. I followed the fair pack at the recently-held Indian Bike Rally, where 20 riders explored 4,500 plus kilometres across seven states, and found why guys were glad.

Rest is history

When bikes were invented in late 1800, female riders were frequently seen on them. Take the case of Augusta and Adeline Van Buren, who belonged to an influential political family in New York during the World War One era.
Just when the US of A was planning to cross the threshold of the combat zone, these two sisters became the first bikers to make a transcontinental journey on two separate motorcycles. At times, they were even arrested for wearing leather jackets, but as more and more women entered the arena, the rules of the game changed.

Tips for women riders
>>To avoid colliding helmets, switch gears swiftly and faster. To do that, easeu00a0 the throttle before shifting, and pull the clutch partially. Then, switch the gear immediately. Slowly, loosen the clutch and reinstate the throttle in its earlier state. If you're not good with changing gears, practice it without a pillion rider.
>>Men can manage hard and sudden brakes because they're accustomed to more physical stress. With women, however, it isn't the best thing to be done, firstly because chances of losing control increase multifold, and the pillion rider gets pushed very hard against you.
>>Acceleration should be steady. If you increase the speed too quick, it works against inertia.
>>Control speed instead of applying brakes to keep it slow.

Pillion Riders
>>
Sit like a girlfriend sits on his lover's bike. Hold the rider tight, because if you lean back, the balance will be lost.u00a0
>>If the rider is a girl and you're not a lesbian, grab the grab rails of the motorcycle.
>>On turns, if the rider tilts left, you, too, should do that, because if you bend right, the bike could skid. Also, don't tilt more than needed.u00a0
>>Don't make sudden movements.
>>Don't sleep.
>>Allow rider to ride; you keep a check on everything else -- spares, toll payments, first aid kit, check-in formalities etc.u00a0
>>Keep talking to the rider so that s/he doesn't doze off.

Been there, done that

Nowhere should you make the rider feel that he's sitting with a
girl who can't
fix punctures and carry bags. basically, behave like a manu00a0u00a0
Suhani

I think suhani has been wonderful company not only because she's a girl, but also because she has that right attitude of living life on the edge
Ashish

I would sing and talk to joseph so that he wouldn't fall asleep.
Then, I would look after hotel check-in and other such things
Roohi

guys ride good with girlsu00a0 because you want to impress them, but at the end of it, she has to have good understanding, like Roohi
Joseph

Even if you're stuck somewhere, deserted, don't panic, because it's not going to help. if you can't maintain composure, it's not for you
Bharti

With a male pillion, the problem is that they would do things their way. With Bharti, it was different. She would cooperate every bit, easily
