For young choreographer Laura Arend, the world is her home. Born in France where she received her early training, she moved to the US in 2009 when she was 18. After establishing herself as a professional in New York, she joined a dance company in Israel. But it was in 2014, when Arend arrived in India to obtain a teaching qualification in yoga, that she found herself stirred from within. "This trip changed my life profoundly. I felt the deep culture shock that many travellers talk about, leaving them with an experience forever graven on their hearts. Back home, you start to question your connection to life, to death and to our constant quest for happiness," says Arend.

The trip became the source of inspiration for her new choreographic composition Yama (Sanskrit: control of self, austerity and moral duty). Three years later, she is back in India to narrate her journey on stage. Presented by Arend's Laboration Art Company, Alliance Française de Bombay and NCPA, Yama weaves certain tenets of the Buddhist philosophy and their practice in yoga.

Her performance will be followed by Jugnee on the following day, a contemporary dance workshop. In partnership with Terence Lewis Dance Company and AF Bombay, it is for professional and semi-professional dancers, led by Arend.
