The use of dance as therapy dates back to the early 1800s, where it was a common practice during religious rituals. From 1840 onwards, Europeans and Americans believed that movement could have an impact on the mind. Michel Casanovas, a French dancer and choreographer, will conduct a workshop to discover the inherent intelligence that lies in a dancer's body.

"Movement is our medium of direct contact with the world. It is like a relationship with the external that creates self-awareness," says Casanovas. The workshop will combine somatic practice (Feldenkrais Method started by Moshé Felden-krais) and movement improvisation. The former is a design to promote mental aptitude by evaluating neuromuscular activities through exercises. "It improves one's flexibility too," adds Casanovas, a dance instructor since 1982, who has spread the magic of Feldenkrais in India through workshops in Assam, New Delhi and Bengaluru.

The session will be held at The Mumbai Assembly. Preeti Gaonkar, director, says, "Participants can learn a lot about their body by focusing on their muscles and joints."
