Rishi Sunak, the son in law of Infosys co-founder Ramarao Narayana Murthy was born on May 12, 1980. He is a British politician who is currently serving as the Chancellor of the Exchequer since February 2020.
He replaced Pakistani Chancellor Sajid Javid as the Chancellor of the Exchequer (finance minister) of the United Kingdom, while Alok Sharma was appointed Business Secretary in the British Cabinet. Sajid Javid resigned after being asked by Prime Minister Johnson to dismiss his parliamentary aides.
Rishi Sunak previously served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from July 2019 to February 2020 and has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond (Yorks) since the 2015 general election.
Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton, Hampshire to an Indian Punjabi family. His early education was at Winchester College. Sunak subsequently studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Lincoln College, Oxford, and later gained an MBA from Stanford University as a full bright scholar.
After graduating, Rishi Sunak worked for investment bank Goldman Sachs, and later as a partner at the hedge fund management firm 'The Children's Investment Fund Management.'
Sunak married Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Indian billionaire and co-founder of Infosys, N. R. Narayana Murthy, in August 2009.
Rishi met Akshata while studying at Stanford University and they have two daughters. He has taken his oath at the House of Commons on the Bhagavad Gita since 2017.
Rishi Sunak's grandparents were born in Punjab and emigrated from East Africa to the UK in the 1960s. His father Yashvir was a general practitioner (GP) and his mother Usha was a pharmacist who ran a local pharmacy. He is the eldest of three siblings.
Sunak voted for former prime minister Theresa May's Brexit deal on all three occasions and was an early supporter of Johnson.
Sunak is seen as a rising star in the Conservative Party, with endorsements from people including former Conservative leader Lord Hague of Richmond, who has described him as an "exceptional individual".
Sunak says, "I have been lucky to live, study and work internationally. I met my wife, Akshata, in California where we lived for a number of years before returning home. We have two daughters, who keep us busy and entertained." He listed his pastimes as keeping fit, cricket, football, and movies.
