For the first time, Food Bloggers Association India is hosting a five-week photography contest with a different theme per week. This week, it’s Guilty Pleasures.

FBAI co-founder Sameer Malkani, says, “One weekly winner will get food hampers, and a certificate. Our 10-jury members, which includes Vicky Ratnani, Chef Bani Nanda, Deeba Rajpal and Kunal Vijaykar, will judge the entries.”

To make it simpler for you, we cornered Saylee Padwal, food photographer and blogger on Food With Saylee, for tips.

>> “You don’t need a high-end camera to click great shots. “In fact, your phone has the option to zoom in, compared to special focal lengths that restrict cameras. The phone allows you to get more details. These make macroshots, and pictures with intricate detailing work like a rage.”

>> Another thing to keep in mind is natural light. “I advocate using daylight, as it makes a huge difference to your pictures. Ambience light throws a harsh yellow light which tends to alter the natural colour of the dish,” she says.

>> “The microgreens will look darker, and the green olives will look black. Say no to filters. It is okay to sharpen an image, though.” she adds.

>> Look at a top shot when there’s a spread. “It could be a breakfast spread with waffles and pancakes, but when you have a single drink, people tend to tilt their phone at a 45 degree angle. That’s not cool,” says Padwal, explaining that the best way to represent a drink is to hold the phone parallel to the glass.

>>
Homecooked food doesn’t need to look boring. Toss a few ingredients around the dish, show a hand to suggest motion and place pepper shakers for mood.
