Food Special: Cook gourmet dishes at home

Spicy Malaysian Tofu Laksa with Udon Noodles

The final photograph of a dish from a recipe might be encouraging, but sourcing the ingredients tends to deter even the most zealous of home chefs while experimenting with a new dish. Few-weeks-old company Hautechef.in aims to solve such problems by stocking all measured ingredients required for a dish from a list of recipes they have on offer.

What's haute?
The recipe menu spans Mexican, Italian, Greek, Malaysian and few others. All you have to do is pick a recipe of your choice, and they will deliver a neatly-packed box with all the ingredients in the right amounts to your doorstep. Our pick was the Mexican Chicken Mole with Cilantro Rice (Rs 400) and Spicy Malaysian Tofu Laksa with Udon Noodles (Rs 500). Both come in a quantity that can serve two people. All the ingredients arrived neatly packed in separate containers — we noticed how olive oil bottles were sealed to avoid spillage. The chicken was placed with an ice pack to preserve it.

Going the exotic way
Impressed with the packaging, we got down to business by chopping the vegetables meant for the Laksa. The steps in the recipe were easy to follow, and were accompanied by images as well. Apart from just a minute change (the recipe mentioned equal cooking time for mushroom and broccoli, which would have killed the mushrooms) the dish turned out perfect and delicious as we followed the recipe to a T. Special mention for the great noodles. The quality of the rest of the ingredients was fresh and on par with the noodles too.

The chicken dish however was a bit of a downer. We had to make several changes to the recipe especially to the recommended cooking times. For those who don't cook regularly, understanding the faults and tweaking the recipe might be a problem. The consistency of the tomato puree included in the ingredients was also too thick. Thankfully, the end result was good, and made up for the effort.

Hautechef gets extra marks for its pricing, as the quantity of both dishes was generous. Also, the Laksa recipe impressed us. Though they currently do not deliver across the city (check their website for delivery locations) Hautechef deserves a dekko on those Sundays when you're in the mood to create exotic fare but aren't keen to break into too much of a sweat as you whip it up.
