Try 14 sauces on a platter of small bites and a lip-smacking margarita at Versova's new relaxed hangout

Restaurant review: The story of 14 sauces in Versova

Signature 14 Sauce Story Vegetarian Platt

The name piqued us, from the word go. Fourteen sauces, really? The month-old Versova eatery, 14 Sauce Story, took us by surprise as soon as we stepped in, in a good way that is. The minimalist décor made us smile — a few watercolour paintings by the brick walls and cushy sofas gave it a welcoming vibe on a Sunday afternoon.

We picked strawberry-flavoured Frozen Margarita ('385) and Screwdriver ('310) from a limited drinks menu. Pink-hued and slushy, the tequila-based margarita was bang on, topped with a rim of chaat masala that brought back fond memories of slurping golas on the city's beaches. Mixing vodka and orange juice in right proportions, the bartender got the Screwdriver right too.

Guess the sauce game
Their food menu covers a range of Italian and South American fare. We were excited about trying the Signature 14 Sauce Story Platter ('675), available in both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The portion was generous and could easily suffice four.

Bordered by thumb-sized bottles of 14 different sauces (we did a head count to double check), the platter was piled with crispy French fries and onion rings, lavash, spicy potato wedges cooked to perfection, carrot and cucumber sticks, nachos, pita, garlic bread and triangular, melt-in-the-mouth spinach and corn feta parcels.

Initially, we didn't like that none of the sauces were labelled; yet, the guessing game ended up being fun. We scoured the menu (that features the sauce names) and could figure out Sriracha Mayo, Homemade Sweet Chilli, Homemade Smokey BBQ, Chive Sour Cream, Roasted Veg Aioli and Whole Grain Mustard.

The cold Dill Yoghurt was our pick along with the not-too-pungent Garlic Aioli, spicy Tartar as well as Roasted Veg Relish with grated carrots and cucumbers. However, the Wasabi Mayo was a bit too overpowering. We did miss out on Mexican salsa, especially with the feta parcels.

Waffle Chicken Burger

Waffle burger, anyone?
Next, we settled for the Waffle Chicken Burger ('355) accompanied by French fries and salad. A breather from the regular bun variety, the crunchy waffles came packed with crispy fried chicken, sriracha mayo, grilled onions, tomatoes and arugula, and took the burger to the next level. The sriracha mayo-and-chicken combo was a hit, though we wished the chef had given arugula a miss as it added a tarty flavour to an otherwise, tasty burger.
