Put the brakes on urban chaos for a day and head to Jawhar to appreciate the simple joys of life
Despite the ripples of urbanisation, there are places no more than a two-hour drive from Mumbai, which seem like a world away from its din. If a break from the wear and tear of city life has been overdue, head to the pristine Jawhar region in the Palghar district this Sunday. Here, a day-long itinerary of experiences promises to offer ample opportunity to participate in the rural way of life. The trip is part of a sustainable tourism initiative that aims to give back to the village community.

"The tribal hamlets of Jawhar struggle with water scarcity, poor lighting and other basic facilities. The villagers here have one season of farming, which means the men have to migrate to find employment for the rest of the year," says Rohan Prakash, business head, Trip 360Ëu00c2u009a, the tour organisers. "All profits from the trip will be ploughed back into the betterment of the villagers, who often miss out on the benefits such trips can throw up." Once participants arrive at the Hiradpada hamlet in Jawhar, their trip will start with snacks at a local's home before they attend a Warli art workshop. Next up is a bamboo basket-making and an optional grass cap-making class. After a simple, hearty meal prepared in a local household, participants will learn the traditional art of cow dung flooring, a floor-smoothening practice followed across rural India.
Participants will witness tarpan naach, a tribal dance form performed by locals
The picturesque Hiradpada waterfall, often called the singing waterfall for its rhythmic sound of gushing water, will be the penultimate stop of the trip. Before heading back to Mumbai, participants will get to witness the tribal dance form of tarpan naach performed by the locals to the tunes of unique instruments.
