People explore marine life at Haji Ali
The Naturalist Foundation has been conducting shoreline walks since 2017, to explore the diverse marine life found in the Mumbai shores. “The popular conversations on biodiversity in Mumbai are usually about birds and mammals, thanks to Sanjay Gandhi National Park and other green spots. But there is a vast, unexplored marine life in the Indian coastline. We are trying to create awareness about the many habitats that dot the Mumbai shoreline as well as catalogue the marine biodiversity in these locations,” shares Chahat Yadav, maritime walk event manager and editor of Project Samvad, a multilingual wildlife podcast by Naturalist Foundation.

The event covers a short area so it can accommodate children and the elderly as well. “We have made the route accessible to people of all age groups. This event helps create conversation on marine life in Mumbai and it’s an event for us to update the various species found here on sites like inaturalist.org, indiabiodiversity.org and others,” shares Yadav. The sessions will be conducted around marine life. Expect to spot small marine creatures like colourful slugs, snails, sea snakes, crabs and cowries. Participants can also look forward to the occasional sighting of the octopus, especially during low tide.
