A new craft beer pays tribute to the Queen of the Suburbs

A toast to Bandra

Taking nothing away from the rest of the suburbs, Bandra Brew is an apt name for a craft beer that, like mid-day, is made in Mumbai. The reason for saying that is that the area, at least in our books, has a drinking culture which is superior to places like Juhu and Andheri. That’s an opinion that might have some readers reaching for a beer bottle to smash on our head, if the opportunity arises. But consider this: the stretch that starts from the lane adjacent to KFC on Linking Road is one of the few places in the city where a person can go pub-hopping on foot, emulating nightcrawlers in global capitals like London and New York.

The drink itself is on the menu of craft-beer manufacturer Brew Whale’s new growler station at Union Park in Bandra West. It’s a lager with the colour of a wheat field in harvest season. There is a slight bitterness to the brew that sits well on the palate, and which complemented the masala-garlic chakhna we whipped up at home as an accompaniment. Some people revel in the plethora of options that craft beers provide. Others couldn’t give two hoots, preferring to stick to regular bottled brands. But even the latter lot would gulp Bandra Brew down, meaning everyone can love it, which sort of makes it the Keanu Reeves of the beer world.
