Jaare lay and Aare lay 


This typical Mumbai slang for “going” and “coming”. I heard this for the first time over 30 years ago, when I met my husband who grew up in mohalla where it was commonly used. Later, we heard this being used a lot in Bollywood movies and then I noticed there were similar sounding words that described other routine activities – sorey lay (sleeping), khare lay (eating) and peere lay (drinking).
