This DIY Diwali kit educates children about the true essence of the festival, and makes it fun and creative too

What can be more intriguing for children than painting diyas and decorating them for Diwali? Well, it is teaching them about the true spirit and legacy of the festival. A combination of fun and learning, we found both in the Family Festive Box by educationist Erika Cunha. An early childhood educator and counsellor for three decades, Cunha believes in enriching, engaging, educating, and entertaining to make kids better citizens.

Each kit contains six creative decorations (rangoli, lanterns, torans, diyas, etc) along with paints, sparkly sequins, and mirrors for decoration. What we liked the most is the Story of Diwali flashcard game. It has the Diwali narrative written and designed intriguingly, making even our six-year-old learn the story, sharing it with every guest who now comes home. It’s the kind of inclusion one wants to raise children with.
Flashcards on the Diwali story
Cunha tells us, “Growing up, we enjoyed the festive prep with the whole family. We created this box as a fun way to bring in the festive season while bonding with kids and grandkids. You can make these for your home or share it with friends as personalised gifts of the season.” The detailed explanation on each packet makes it a fun project for children — however, adult supervision is required for younger ones while using paint and scissors. The festive lantern — though not 3D — makes for a great wall hanging and also teaches kids the concept of sequencing. We’ve decided to use it as a backdrop for our Diwali Zoom calls with friends and family. The Regal Rangoli with a peacock pattern when made can be reused and kids have decided to make and gift it to our kind neighbours along with the Welcoming Toran that is cut, painted and decorated by them individually. While the Elephant Parade seemed confusing at first, once we began work on it, we found a way out. A video on YoutTube or Instagram would have helped smoothen the process.
