Every year, Pantone (the company whose colour matching system is used to design and print everything from a mouse pad to a couture gown) announces a colour that they predict will inspire trends for the year. For 2022, the company introduced a new colour in their range called Very Peri. Thanks to the unicorn colour trend  (a whimsical mix of powdery pastel pinks and blues), violets, lavender and lilac tones have already been a huge part of the fashion industry with both, high-street and couture houses widely using the shade range even for their 2022 collections. Pantone describes Very Peri as a dynamic periwinkle hue with violet-red undertone. The company agrees that it’s been a tough two years for everyone, and this shade has been created to inspire confidence, creativity and embrace the transition.

Shubhika Sharma, founder of the label Papa Don’t Preach, who’s been known for her signature use of violets, lilacs and lavenders in her collections since the brand’s inception a decade ago is excited about Very Peri. “Pantone describes it as a periwinkle blue with an undertone of red. Blue represents calm, cool, fresh, while red is for energy and movement. That very well describes the times we are in, a transition between the millennials and the Gen Z. Millennials were happier, good-vibes-only people, whereas Gen Z is more energy-focused; they want to do more, see more and be heard more. This colour is symbolic of the transition and a really beautiful bridge between Indian and western aesthetics,” says Sharma. She adds that you will see this shade used widely in Indian and western wear, and high-street labels are already flooded with this shade in ribbed T-shirts, fitted crop tops and athleisure as well. “This colour teams beautifully with gold and is commonly used in enamelled jewellery. You will see this colour in Indian architecture [especially in Jaipur]. I use it a lot in my Indian wear as it complements all other colours. It balances Indian jewel tones very well and you can team it with emerald green or ruby red. For western wear, pair it with crisp whites, beige and camel tones. Wear it with military green pants, denim, or even with linen pants or shorts with a blazer over it. It looks beautiful in satin, so a formal shirt with an interesting bow or neck or sleeve detail in this colour works,”
explains Sharma.

Thanks to wearing masks, bright eye shadow shades have dominated the make-up trends of 2021, and purples and neon shades are some of the hottest colours to go for. Very Peri fits perfectly in our bid to brighten our appearance with the mask on. “Make-up in 2022 is here to be seen and heard — move over soft, subtle shades and say hello to happy vibrant shades to lift the mood and make us smile. Make-up is a rebellion and the shades we use are our placards,” says celebrity hair and makeup artist Daniel Bauer. Bauer says that there is a lot to love about the colour that he feels exudes love and charm, and can work brilliantly as a make-up shade despite being daring. “The ’90s and Y2K era will trend over the next 12 months, and Very Peri will be the perfect lip and nail shade to round off any look from this period. For those a little less daring, the shade is brilliant as a single one-and-done eye shadow. You can also use it in the form of a kajal pencil on the waterline to make your eyes pop,” says Bauer.

Experiment with different textures and finishes, be it glitter, retro matte eye shadow, or even super glossy lids in this shade. You can also dab a little on the inner corner of your eyes to make them look whimsical yet bright. Since it falls in the blue category, you can do a mix of similar tones to create a buffed out blue eye look, with some shimmer highlights. And for some hair magic, add subtle highlights and lowlights, or create a money piece or curtain bangs in this colour.
