These sets of lifelike flash cards chaperones young minds into diverse realms of nature

In quest of new worlds

Jarnav explores the flash cards

What can a kid look forward to on an uncomfortably hot day? As children zoom off on fancy, we aren’t sure if four-year-old Jarnav would have been happier to get a box of chocolates, ice candies or one hour of corridor cricket. His response to the unopened packs of flash cards we wanted him to play with was rather lukewarm. But then, his eyes shone on spotting an orange goldfish speckled with silver shine. On recognising the magnificent being, Jarnav’s interest in Hungry Brain’s advance flash cards was piqued. Now, he wanted to browse and further that familiarity.

He had two 24-card sets to tinker with. The topics were Nature in Motion and Sea Creatures. The kid’s next eureka moment happened on picking the dolphin card. “Soon, he wasn’t looking for things and living beings he had seen or heard of, but asking which is what,” his mom shares with us. While these cards act as visual cues with tidbits of handy information on the back, they facilitate memory-building.

In the following days, the child could not only tell a shark from an octopus but had also devised a fun quiz game to badger his grandfather. Sonia Purohit, Jarnav’s mother, says, “He keeps asking his cousins about sea organisms that we don’t commonly see. Once he has some context to a card, he tests his dadu’s knowledge on it.” The family seemed to be playfully bonding over the kit.

The topic, Nature in Motion, contained sights that Jarnav is well-versed with. Although he liked fiddling with that set of cards, it didn’t grab his attention for long. We surmise he has an inclination for life under water. The kindergartener’s mother was relieved to see that each visual card is made up of food-grade material, which means there’s nothing to worry even if the kid nibbles at it. She added that since children are never cautious while playing, cards end up in torn halves or with folded corners. “That didn’t seem like an instant possibility with these packs we have received. The cards are sturdy.” As Jarnav imagines his private world of sharks, seahorses and the solar system, we hope his playtime enriches his mind.
