The searing summer sun can zap the moisture from your skin and hair. Here’s how you can prevent that from happening

Mumbai is sizzling, and the rising temperatures offer little respite for your skin and hair. In addition to layering on sunscreen, it’s also important to protect yourself from dehydration. “Dehydrated skin looks flaky, red and dull. It can also feel itchy and taut,” explains Dr Niketa Sonavane, a cosmetic dermatologist at Ambrosia Aesthetics. Dehydrated hair is brittle, thin and more prone to breaking. She recommends following a few basic steps.

Choose the right products
Check for products that contain hyaluronic acid, Dr Sonavane suggests: “This acid holds up to 1,000 times its weight in hydration. Serums and gels containing hyaluronic acid absorb quickly, penetrate deeply and feel very light on the skin. Layer this with a few drops of cold-pressed organic jojoba oil at night. Jojoba oil contains ceramides that restore your skin barrier, preventing water loss.” she says.

Mask frequently
Sheet masks can offer a burst of hydration to parched skin and soothe skin irritation. However, do not go overboard with their use, Dr Sonavane warns, as many sheet masks contain propylene glycol, which is a humectant that draws water to your skin, but can also lead to skin sensitivity and worsening of dryness if overused.

Humidify
Humidifiers create a micro-environment of humid air around your desk and are especially useful while drying in air-conditioned environments. Using a humidifier makes your skin supple while also moisturising your hair strands.

Pamper your hair
Avoid shampoos that contain sulphates, which lift up the hair cuticles and allow water to evaporate from your hair strands. Pamper your hair with a hydrating deep conditioner once every week. Apply this liberally on washed hair, cover with a shower cap and leave for 30 minutes. Add a leave-in conditioner to your hair care routine. Seal-in the moisture with a few drops of cold-pressed Jojoba oil or a hair serum.
