As butter yellow takes over celebrity looks and social media, an expert suggests ways to incorporate the shade for every kind of occasion

From Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor Khan to Sabrina Carpenter, and famous runway models, butter yellow is emerging as the flavour of the season. But as Mumbai prepares for the monsoon, is it a practical choice to incorporate the light shade in our wardrobes? Personal branding expert and image consultant Mihika Bhanot tells us that the key is in layering. “Butter yellow is very easy to style, but it is also a colour that not many may typically opt for. It adds a pop of colour to your outfits. You can wear the colour for a bold and young look, or even achieve the introverted, delicate and dainty look. It is a versatile shade that can be styled to suit your personality and various occasions,” Bhanot explains. She suggests some hacks to nail the colour, while keeping the volatile climate of the city in mind.

Focus on layering
Mumbai may soon witness showers. Butter yellow is a shade that can easily take a messy turn. “You don’t necessarily need to add the colour to your apparel. You can also have fun with accessories to hop on to the bandwagon,” she says. For instance, pair an all-grey outfit with a butter yellow handbag. Add small elements like earrings, a necklace, chunky bracelets, pumps and signature heels, ties and bags. “But remember to not overdo it. If you’re going for a chunky necklace, keep your earrings and necklace minimalistic. You can also add more golden accessories to your outfit this season, given that it is the closest colour to yellow. Some of the best outfits usually have one focal point. And butter yellow is a good colour to create that [effect],” she suggests.

Play with colours
“Buttercup yellow requires another colour to give it power. In the fashion world, we have something called an accented neutral colour scheme. Accent is a brighter shade that will go well with sober tones like butter yellow,” she adds. For this, one can opt for various shades of pink — like a magenta dress, and pair it with butter yellow earrings, scarf, and pumps. “Other colours that will complement well and create a colour block include electric blue, sky blue, purple, indigo, aqua, pastel green, and whites, like ivory and cream,” she says, adding that one should not shy away from trying a combination of red and yellow or
even monochromes.

“Monochromes make you look level-headed and strong. You can opt for co-ord sets, power suits, or butter yellow dresses like what Deepika Padukone had sported last month. Another look to try would be a butter yellow satin dress. But in this case, remember to go all out on accessories,” she recommends. Making a reference to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s recent airport look, she says that one can style a simple shirt with white pants, or go for a butter yellow ruffled shirt over a grey checkered skirt for a more corporate setting. “Pair a yellow skater skirt with a white T-shirt and you’re ready for brunch.” For men, she says, that shades like this give them a softer look. “Go for yellow linen oversized shirts, pair them with ivory linen pants or light grey trousers. Incorporate soft pops of yellow in your daily outfits by getting butter yellow ties, laptop bags, suitcases and so on,” she signs off.
